October 24, 2007

NBoundZ would like to announce the 2008 sponsorship of Performance Friction Brakes on the NBoundZ #350 Nissan Z.  NBoundZ has been using the CarbonMetallic brakes for the last 6 months on the #350 Nissan Z and love the fast braking and absence of brake fade.  We are very happy to be using performance Friction Brake CarbonMetallic pads going forward in 2008.  Performace Friction Brakes has also agreed to participate in the NASA Arizona Scholarship program and will provide a free set of pads for the winning participant.  If you are not using Performance Friction Brakes CarbonMetallic pads now, we will get you in touch with an authorized dealer so you can STOP faster and eliminate brake fade and say “hello” to faster times on the track.

October 6th and 7th NASA / CRA Phoenix International Raceway event

October 9, 2007

October 6th

We couldn’t have asked for better weather, other than it was a little breezy.  It was “cold” in the morning which started my troubles.  Let’s say, Saturday was the start of a challenging weekend.  I went out in the first practice session and I fought the car the entire time.  For the first time in about 5 months, I spun the car.  I came into turn 4 at my normal speed after my tires were warm and suddenly I was sideway, I tried to save it, but after a couple of wags, she went all the way around and I was in the center of the track facing the wrong way.  I got to watch the race practice session from a vantage point I didn’t like, head on.  The cars split me as they approached me and Tony Lisa even decided to use it as an opportunity to pass a couple of people and he waived as he went by.  I was able to pull out of the way, and enter once traffic had cleared.  I continued for about 5 more minutes, but I couldn’t keep the car straight.  I pulled in early.  The second session was more of the same, but I stayed out and tried to figure out what was up.  I came in and made an adjustment to my rear wing to give me more downforce for qualifying.  I did okay in qualifying, I ran a 1:13:591, putting me 18th out of 30.  We filled the car up with gas and softened the front shock for the race, but we couldn’t get to the rear shock without drilling a hole or taking the shock off.  I struggled through the whole race and slip and slided almost every corner, the car was still too stiff, but she wasn’t pushing as much.  Due to mechanical difficulties of my competitors in my class and a couple of incidents, I still won the PTB class.  Praise Jesus for that victory, it wasn’t my driving!  Before we left, we cleaned the car, rotated the tires and softened the preload.

October 7th

This was a very different day.  I was running a special run group that day, so I had a chance to go out and test the car without any pressure from other cars.  The AWD Suburu’s weren’t able to stay close even with the car handling poorly as she was.  I immediately knew we were going to have to make adjustments if we wanted to try to drive the car the remainder of the day, I was losing confidence and the car didn’t seem safe to drive.  We immediately increased the preload to the original tension and started to take off the coilovers to soften the shock.  Just then Jeremy Renshaw suggested we drill a hole for access to the adjustment.  It seemed like an easier thing to do, so we started drilling.  We made two perfect holes and easily made the adjustment.  I asked Brady Dohrmann to take the car out and drive it to see what he thought about the handling compared to the two factory Nissan 350Z cars he drives.  He put on a show, he drove 1:11’s with the car and finished the session with an incredible display of drifting (see the photo album).  Brady had no complaints about the car and I had a new gold standard of what the car was capable of with that set up.  I took the car out in the next TT session and she felt like the car I knew, my confidenced soared and I did a personal best at 1:12:714.  I got out of the car stoked!  Joe Baugh had gone to get fuel for the race, so we were close to being ready for qualifying.  We made some minor adjustments and went out to qualify.  I had a great session, Tony Lisa was behind me the entire time and gave me a welcomed compliment about figuring out how to go fast after the session, so I was confident we ran well.  I qualified with a 1:12:456, which was the best placing so far, I would start 14th.  Chet Mann from SRD fed us lunch and then we rested before the race.

The race was good times.  It was very competitive and the car stayed straight for the majority of the time, unfortunately a good friend ended his day in the wall.  Pray for Scott and check out his video.

I won the PTB class again due to mechanical difficulties of the other Z’s on the track.  Give God all the Glory again!  We came home in one piece with only a couple of things to work out before the next event in November.  I will only be racing Sunday on November 25th due to family being in town, but I hope to see everyone out if you can make it!
